Thessalonica’s Prayer List

Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored, as happened among you, and that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men. For not all have faith.

2 Thessalonians 3:1-2

Notice Paul’s requests:

  • “for us” – for himself and his partners, Silvanus and Timothy (1:1)
  • “that the word of the Lord may speed ahead…” – for the sake of the gospel (their missionary work)
  • “that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men” (v.2) – for God’s protection

“Do you pray regularly for success of the gospel among the unbelievers you know? It is easy for us to forget to pray for the gospel’s advance, but the Lord uses our prayers to make the gospel effective in His elect. Let us pray on a regular basis for the gospel’s success among unbelievers, and let us start doing so today.”

— Tabletalk [March 2020 – Day 19] from Ligioner Ministries

  • “for us, [the workers]” – pray for pastors, missionaries, ministry workers, and frontliners
  • “that the word of God may speed ahead” – pray for the fruitfulness and speedy advance of the work and the word everywhere
  • for the protection, deliverance, health/safety of faithful Christians

Paul asks the Thessalonians to pray for these things and we can continue this prayer: for missionaries, for the spread of the gospel, for the unbelievers we know and even for our own “gospel work.” So simple, yet truly important!

In your life, this could be:

  • Your pastor, any workers you know
  • Yourself as a “missionary” to those around you, a growing desire to share the gospel, and your Spirit-empowered efforts of personal evangelism
  • Friends, family, and “neighbours” to know Jesus
  • Your growth in the depth of knowledge of Christ and increased opportunities to share
  • Protection from pride, cowardice, false guilt, fear of man, or other temptations/sins we may fall pray to when considering/engaging in evangelism
