According to Who?

Reflection on Philippians 4:19

And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus.

Philippians 4:19


Paul the missionary writes this as he ends off a letter to His faithful financial supporters. He has asked them to continue their support. But at no point does Paul plead, beg, guilt, shame or attempt to evoke pity. He explains,

I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength. Yet it was good of you to share in my troubles.

Philippians 4:11-14


Paul thanks the Philippians for investing in his mission, and asks them to keep giving. He also reassures them that his source of strength and contentment is Christ alone.

And then. He states this amazing truth: God will meet all your needs. This is for them, for Paul, for us. Not only will He “just” must our needs, but He will supply every need according to the riches of His glory.

Think about the phrase “according to.” Let’s create an example… Imagine your car gets totaled and you can’t afford to replace it—but wait! Your good friend Bill Gates is there to lend a hand.

If he meets your need (for a car) out of his great wealth, he reaches into his pocket and pays to replace your car. And you’re back putting around in your second-hand 2003 Toyota.

BUT! If buddy Bill takes care of your need according to his net worth, he’s hooking you up with a brand new, top of the line, elite luxury vehicle. (Maybe a Rolls Royce??) Not only that, but your bestie Bill pays off your mortgage, has a full home reno done, upgrades your furniture, fills up your fridge (complete with private chef to cook it), and gets you some real estate on the moon, just for kicks. And who knows? There may be even more coming.

So what does it mean for the endlessly wealthy Sovereign King of the Universe to supply every need of His beloved children according to the riches of His glory in Christ Jesus?

You tell me.
