Reflection on Psalm 51:10
In other versions: “Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” We sometimes feel helpless to change ourselves, especially in regard to sin. It’s not something we can just force ourselves to do. But God has the power to change and renew us—in fact, He is pleased to transform us into “clean” (holy), pure, righteous, steadfast people—and He will.
For context, Psalm 51 was written by David when the prophet Nathan confronted him after his a adultery with Bathsheba. David was in some serious sin, and until he was confronted, he was not sorry nor did he even desire to change.
Yet God changes David’s heart and renews his spirit. Our God can do so for us as well—even if our heart’s not there yet.
